Al Raha Theatre

The theatre, located right on the waterfront at Al Raha beach, and constructed at a cost of Dh85 million within a year, has a seating capacity of 2,100. The theatre comes under the ministry's wing and boasts the most advanced equipment and features. It is meant to become a landmark for the country's cultural life.

A large number of actors, directors and all those connected to the stage throughout the GCC attended the inauguration, as did senior government officials.

The theatre will play a major role in the social and cultural life of Abu Dhabi, said Saqr Ghobash, undersecretary in the Ministry of Information and Culture.

Mazeed Al Mazeed, the secretary general of the GCC Gulf Theatre, stressed the need to promote drama and take it to the masses.

"It's a major development for the UAE in particular and theatre in general. We hope this new facility will help promote drama and focus on real-life issues in UAE," said Dr Habib Al Attar, Senior Director of the ministry's Culture Department, himself a stage director and playwright.

The theatre has a king-size stage nearly 24 metres long and 30 metres wide, with a revolving centre section, a trapdoor enabling actors to drop down from the stage, and multiple rows of lighting.

The back wall of the stage opens outdoors into an amphitheatre, with additional seating for 1,000 and is meant to promote open air theatre.

The opening also marked the return of the GCC's Gulf Theatre Festival to Abu Dhabi after a 10-year hiatus. It will continue until September 28. The festival's opening play, Lailey Ahmed bin Majed, was staged on the occasion.

The play, by Jawad Al Asadi, an Abu Dhabi playwright, portrays the life of Arab seafarer Ahmed bin Majed who aided Vasco da Gama during his visit to the Gulf.
